Curriculum

The textbook we will be using is called 'Let’s Learn Chinese.'  It has a range of proficiency levels, including Starter, Basic, and Levels 1-10. The book is based on frequently used words, phrases, and grammar in similar topic-based teaching, and gives examples of dialogue to gradually build up our students’ ability in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It also has in-class games and task-based activities, to promote natural learning. 

Using these textbooks, our school has formulated a bank of words, phrases, and sentence patterns serving as a guideline to help students to master this language. In order to achieve these goals, we strongly encourage and emphasize recording homework. This way, learning Chinese can be a part of our students' day to day life. We also teach students how to type in Chinese at Level 3, with students usually ranging from about 9-12 years old. This adds an important skill in a largely digital world, and improves our students’ abilities in recognizing characters easily. It also allows students to communicate with family members and/or friends in Chinese. 

 

Phonetic Class

Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese K2
This class focuses on Hanyu Pinyin phonetic learning, spelling phonetic symbols, differentiating the four tones in Chinese pronunciations, basic teachings on writing Chinese character strokes, listening comprehension, and speaking basic Mandarin Chinese. 


Level 1
Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese Book 1
This class will continue to focus on phonetic Hanyu Pinyin,  spelling phonetic symbols, differentiating the four tones in pronunciations, listening comprehension, and speaking basic Mandarin Chinese. In addition, we will focus on writing Chinese character strokes and basic vocabulary, phrases, and sentence patterns.


Level 2
Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese Book 2
In this class, our students are becoming proficient in phonetic spelling to build up a solid foundation for Chinese typing at Level 3. The class will also focus on writing Chinese character strokes, learning frequently-used vocabulary and phrases, making sentences, listening comprehension, and speaking basic Mandarin Chinese. 


Level 3
Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese Book 3
This class continues to teach new, frequently-used vocabulary, phrases, units of measures, and sentence patterns to build up listening skills, reading comprehension, and speaking abilities. We will also be using sentence patterns to write sentences. We will teach students how to use helpful online tools to assist their learning. At this level, we will introduce typing Chinese using Hanyu Pinyin in order to make sentences, help build vocabulary, and memorize words and phrases better.  


Level 4
Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese Book 4
We continue to focus on new, frequently-used vocabulary, phrases, units of measures, and sentence patterns to build up listening skills, reading comprehension, and speaking abilities.We will continue our focus on typing Chinese sentences. We will be building up more advanced vocabulary and phrases for making advanced sentences, teaching our students how to express their own words in Chinese, and reading short stories and articles. 


Level 5
Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese Book 5
We will continue to focus on learning new, frequently-used vocabulary, phrases, units of measures, and sentence patterns to build up listening skills, reading comprehension, and speaking abilities. We will continue to practice typing Chinese sentences and proficiency in Hanyu Pinyin. Our students will be building more advanced vocabulary and phrases for making complex sentences, learning how to express their own words in Chinese, as well as reading short stories and articles. 


Level 6
Textbook: Let's Learn Chinese Book 6
This class will continue to focus on new, frequently-used vocabulary, phrases, units of measures, and sentence patterns to build up listening skills, reading comprehension, and speaking abilities. We will continue to practice typing Chinese sentences and proficiency in Hanyu Pinyin. Our students will be building more advanced vocabulary and phrases for making complex sentences, practice expressing their own words in Chinese, as well as reading short stories, articles, and Chinese poems.
